All things classic Cylon and beyond.

Agro ShipAgro Ship is the common classification for spacecraft capable of growing any edible agro foodstuffs needed in a convoy or Fleet for long periods of time. These crafts have translucent hull plates interconnected in a structural enforcement grid, which allow the plants to receive the necessary sunlight from a nearby star or some other stellar formation to achieve the state of photosynthesis. Artificial lighting is, apparently, also an important function of these Agro Ships. One of the crops grown aboard the agro ships is the tallon plant. Agro Ships are unarmed, but can withstand an assault for some period of time. Galactica's Fleet has three such Agro Ships; two of which are destroyed by the Cylons and the third, the Agro Ship 9, experiences a hull breach via a destroyed airlock.

Notes on the filming miniature: The Agro Ships are reuses of the spacecraft from "Silent Running", a Universal/MCA movie that special effects guru John Dykstra worked on a few years prior to Battlestar Galactica. The same shots of the Agro Ship destruction sequence first used in the episode "The Magnificent Warriors" were reused in the "Galactica 1980" episode "Space Croppers".

BattlestarBattlestars are warships built in direct response to the war with the Cylons. Introduced into Colonial forces around 500 yahren into the war, and proved formidable when placed against the technically-superior Cylon Basestars. Many Battlestars were totally destroyed during significant battles. Only the Galactica and Pegasus survived the Cylon onslaught.

Notes on the filming miniature: The ship model for Galactica was 6 feet in length and weighed 60 pounds. The model was built from various parts from hundreds of cannibalized plastic model kits, such as those from mini-scaled battleships, land vehicles and planes from the World War II era, to the point that the crew had the feeling that, if it hadn't been for World War II, Galactica (the model) would not have been possible.

Canaris ShuttleThe Canaris is a shuttle that makes runs to and from the Rising Star. The shuttle is laid out much like a common flight, with two rows of seats on each side of the shuttle, as well as a scanner behind every pair of seats.

The filming miniature itself was later altered into the Earth Defense Directorate Shuttle to be used in "Buck Rogers in the 25th Century".

CelestraThe Celestra is a civilian electronics ship within the Fleet, primarily responsible for work in the field of electronics, including Viper equipment, development and testing.

Colonial MoversThe Colonial Movers - We Move Anywhere.

At least two Colonial Movers ships appear in the Original Series, with a similar design and the same slogan. They can be seen prominently during "Saga of a Star World", when the ships are first escaping the Colonies. However, they do not figure prominently in any TOS story line.

Plastic model builders may recognize the front of the ship as an element of the heat shield of the second stage engines of a Saturn V moon rocket model.

Colonial Plumbers / Four-Tube ShipThe Colonial Plumbers or Four-Tube Ship is one of the famous background ships built mostly from spare parts that were left over from building the main miniatures. These vehicles were used to fill in the ranks of the Rag-Tag Fleet and using all these weird parts led to some bizarre designs like this one. The ship was never important enough to receive an official name nor specific function so the name stated here is purely fan-given.

Flattop ShipThe Flattop Ship is a type of salvage and repair ship in the Fleet, acting as a mobile spacedock.

The design of the ship was influenced by a short comic strip called "It's a Small Universe" (published in Heavy Metal #6 in September 1977) drawn by famous French sci-fi / comic artist Jean "Moebius" Giraud, which featured an identical-looking spacecraft.

You can read more on that here.

Gemini FreighterThe Gemini Freighter appears as the ship where Cassiopeia is rescued in. The refugees aboard are primarily from Gemini and are living in the ship's freight containers. The freighter is one of several ships suspected of having a solium leak, which led to the discovery of Cassiopeia and the fact that Sire Uri was greedily hoarding supplies onboard the Rising Star. It would later travel to Carillon and remain in orbit over the planet until Carillon's destruction.

In "Galactica 1980", another freighter named Delphi was featured. It was the fleets' schooling ship and was destroyed during a Cylon attack.

Inner Fleet Shuttle / Inter-Colony BusThe Inner Fleet Shuttle or Inter-Colony Bus is another example for the obscure background ships built to fill the ranks of the Rag-Tag Fugitive Fleet.

A specific name or function was never assigned to it, so the name is again given by fans.

The original miniature itself was later given to the model builders at Universal Hartland to be altered into the Draconian Time Capsule to be used in the "Buck Rogers in the 25th Century" episode "Ardala Returns".

LandramA Landram is a tracked vehicle used for ground operations, typically transported to a planet via a shuttle. It is capable of holding crew and cargo and is equipped with a top mounted turret weapon. Several Landrams were used for the initial scouting of Carillon. They were later used to evacuate civilians and warriors from the "pleasure resort" on the planet.

Mineral / Livery ShipThe Mineral Ship is a ship in the Fleet capable of mining and planetary landing. Commander Adama orders the landing of mineral ships on Carillon in order to begin extracting tylium.

Power SledThe Power Sled is an unarmed tracked ground transport vehicle used by the Colonials on special away missions. Most importantly, the Sled was used to transport an old energizer (sans Colonial markings) on the planet Sectar, home to a small agricultural settlement of humans, in exchange for new seed after a Cylon assault destroyed two of the fleet's three Agro Ships, leaving the remaining vessel with a breached airlock.

"Pre-Eastern Alliance Destroyer"Originally built as one of the background Rag-Tag Fleet ships, this miniature was mainly made from three F-15 Eagle fuselages turned upside down with some additional model parts added.

Requiring another ship for the newly introduced Eastern Alliance in the episode "Greetings from Earth", it was given to the model builders at Universal Hartland to be altered into the Eastern Alliance Destroyer, hence the fan-given name of the ship.

Prison BargeThe Colonials flew an old-style class of liner relegated to support roles or adopted as cargo transports. Following the destruction of the Twelve Colonies, however, at least one of these old vessels is transformed into a prison barge, where criminals were detained.

Plastic model builders may recognize that two submarine halves were used for creating the Prison Barge's main upper hull.

Rising StarPrior to the Battle of Cimtar and subsequent fall of the Twelve Colonies, the Rising Star was a luxury liner operated by Trans Stellar Spacelines which traveled throughout the Colonies and various sectors in the Colonial sphere of influence. It is capable of both atmospheric and space flight, as well as planetary landing and unaided launch.

ShuttleThe Shuttle is a large, twin-engined cargo craft. Shuttles are unarmed, but are capable of carrying a Landram (or Snowram) and cargo in addition to a crew compliment. Shuttles are equipped with a loading ramp that allows for rapid deployment of the stowed vehicle. Shuttles can also be used for deploying parachute troops, dropping out of the Shuttle from a special chamber. In the hours after the Cylon attack on the Colonies, Shuttles of this type ferried survivors from ships in the new civilian fleet to Galactica for medical treatment.

While the cockpit has seating for two pilots, the rear compartment has ample room for large numbers of civilian passengers. Shuttles are also outfitted with emergency channels, which relay telemetry to their home base on the condition of the ship.

The Shuttle is also used in "Galactica 1980", in particular Shuttle Alpha, a craft that ferries the Super Scouts to Earth.

SnowramA modified version of the Landram for use in frigid climates like the ice planet Arcta.

Stellar Mining ShipOriginally built by Carl Aldana, the Stellar Mining Ship is yet another member of the numerous background ships of the Rag-Tag Fugitive Fleet.

Also never officially named, the name was derived from the "Stellar Mining" plate mounted on the portside of the miniature.

For the later episode "Take the Celestra", the original miniature was once again given to the model builders of Universal Hartland to be converted into the titular miniature, the fleets' electronics ship, the Celestra.

Triangle ShipAnother member of the background ships in the Rag-Tag Fleet. This ship also never received a name during the show, so the name was derived from its distinctive shape. Originally built by Andrew Probert for the pilot episode, the Triangle Ship had the honor to be featured in Classic BSG's opening credits so it can be seen in every episode (even if lasting only a few seconds).

Tubeship / "Eagle Bash" ShipThe last one in our collection of background Rag-Tag Fleet ships! Like the other ships before, the Tubeship also was never mentioned by name or function so it was left to the fans again to have it named. The second name was chosen since the mid section of this vessel was mostly made from an 1975/77 Airfix "Space: 1999" Eagle kit.

ViperThe Colonial Viper is the primary space superiority fighter and attack craft deployed by the Colonial military. Capable of both atmospheric and long-range spacial flight, the Viper is a single-pilot craft with two-forward mounted laser-torpedo guns as standard.

The Viper is capable of rapid acceleration in the form of a "turbo boost" feature. Vipers are also able to abruptly stop forward acceleration by using their reverse thrusters and braking flaps.
