AH HA! TO THE DVDs

EXCELLENT suggestion Red Eye... that shot of Vulpa's shot

is GOOD. He got a Colonial with it too... heehee... but then Starbuck shot him in the back and then the chest! HOW RUDE lol
Now upon reviewing my DVD in an exhaustive 15 minute super slow-mo study. (Still on my TV, right now, paused) I have to agree with you Red Eye. There are more than 3 or 4 lights. I am guessing there are a total of 8.
Borrowing your pics Red Eye

-There is only one lens flare on Vulpa's helmet

-There are TWO blue lens flares, not just one. Two lights, the camera sees them both, not a "just because it is so bright" or it would have the one on the helmet doubled too.
-Back to just the single flare

-I agree there many lights. And they light in four groups of two.

Super Slow Motion step through of the 4 frames of the shot:
FRAME ONE

-Vulpa pulls the trigger to seal the doom of a rotten Colonial!

(Go Vulpa!) and two lights light at the back of the barrel light, ALSO, the clear tip lights up. NEXT FRAME
FRAME TWO
-The next pair of lights down the barrel light come on, the first two go off - again two based on two lens flairs on screen, and a single one on Vupla's helmet is also totally visible (not pictured in the caps here). The clear tip is also still lit, it has remained on since the first frame... the barrel lights are the only sequencing thing so far. NEXT FRAME
FRAME THREE
-The rifle's lens flairs are all gone, but there are obvious blue lights in the next section of the rifle. I think this is a perspective issue... the black "bars" and the angle of the gun keep the true light from being seen by the camera - hence no flair just a glow. INTERESTING thing in this frame is the tip has gone out - it is not lit up like before, only has a faint blue glow like the barrel (not pictured in the caps here). NEXT FRAME
FRAME FOUR
-Just the clear tip is lit again and it is
BRIGHT. Again there is a double flair... there must be a "pair light" right at the end of the barrel behind the tip, or a two lights the tip... it is
REALLY bright - brighter than frames 1 and 2 (not pictured in the caps here).
So Cylon-Knight analysis of the Red Eye information and DVDs leads me to believe. 8 lights. And one 1 crazy sequence
