Possible new chrome method?

Post by azuma » Fri Aug 02, 2013 9:07 am

Don't know if this has been covered before, but I was recently told that there are many chrome cars were actually covered by 3M chrome wrap. I am wondering if 3m chrome wrap can be applied on ABS or PS sheet before forming. Since it require some heat to smooth out the surface after applied on the object, it might be ok for forming. Any thought?

Here is the video for your reference:

You can easily find this chrome wrap on ebay:

hmmm - looks neat. I see no reason that if the ABS was primed well it wouldn't work. That is not a lot of heat for plastic to take and even regular chrome paint will heat up.
The guy looks like he knows what he is doing, but it still looked pretty hard - plus he was tugging hard too. It would be frustrating to have bendable and floppy thin plastic not stay in place while you are trying to push this stuff in place.
I wouldn't mind trying this on a shoulder bell just to see how it works.

thanks for sharing

That has been around a while. Maybe 7 -8 years but the cost has been a bit out if reach so not many people have used. I do know the price has come down to take that emergency price away from. It is also in leather. Yes chrome colored leather for that fancy disco dance floor mini skirt.

My idea is to applied the chrome wrap on the flat Styrene sheet before put it into vaccum forming. And then forming the Styrene sheet together with chrome wrap.

I checked the datasheet of the chrome wrap, the heat resistence should be up to 85
