Another UK Cylon Goes into Production

Post by ross0379 » Wed Jun 29, 2011 3:05 pm

Taken a bit longer then anticipated to finally get my Cylon Helmet delivered and I have to say I was quite excited today when it fianlly arrived this afternoon.

As you can it's a full cast and will require some care and attention before painting and plating can commence. I've ordered my modeliing knives today so will hopefully have the eye piece ready for the visor next week and will spend the majority of my time beforehand using the various grades of sanding down.

I will no doubt be after a Scanner soon enough and am very interested in odering one from here, so was wonderting if the Scanners are still avialiable to buy?

This is my first attempt at this kind of project so any tips as I progress would be most welcome.

Great update ross0379! Good to see another Cylon start up... we can't have too many ;)
Looking forward to more on your build.

As far as the eye scanner...
-We have two members that provide them: Groupleader Zeta & Retro1, info on the kits they sell are in the Cylon Store section of this forum.

Other online options:
-Hyperdyne Labs as two options, a display (can't get your head in the helmet with it) and wearable version. (http://www.hyperdynelabs.com/)
-Jupiter Electronics has one too (http://www.jupiterstore.com/servlet/StoreFront)

Each eye has it's pros/cons and there is a vast price range. Pick the one that works for you - and we'll "see" you on the Basestar ;)

So is this a fiberglass helmet? Can't wait to see how this comes along. Thanks for sharing, and posting.

Okay, today managed to get some work done on the Helmet.

Cut out the visor and sanded the edges nice and smoothe so the mouth grill and resin visor will now fit in to place.

Got a bit excited with the scapel at one point and made a slight crack in the upper left corner on the visor plate during the cutting out. Never mind I have some "Serious Glue" to patch that up which hardens to plastic when dry. It's a beautiful day here so that should dry out in the garden in no time.

Here's a couple of pictures, excuse my brother looking a bit bewildered while he holds in for the camera.

Hi m8 i dont know what Flocast is... yea my lid was fiberglass but i also had 2 styrene lids done at VMC at the same time and al the rest of the armour was styrene too. i think the baking process reaches about 80 ish degree not hot enough to warp or melt the styrene not sure about Flocast though???

My brother managed to meet Richard Hatch today at the Earls Court London Comic Con.

Unfortunately I was unable to go due to being in the midst of selling my property at the moment and having the Estate Agents over, on a Saturday of all days?

Slow progress in the helmet build but today after finally getting some tools to crack on with the job I started the filling and sanding process.

On this cast there were quite a few imperfections which needed to be and still need to be ironed out (for want of a better phrase). A few spots around the bottom edges were a little flakey in places so today after some advice from other members I filled the necessary spots with good old Filler usually used for car plastics such and bumpers and wing mirrors that kind of thing.

Image
Good stuff this, goes solid in 8 minutes so it's a kind of a race to get the filler in place once it's been mixed up.

Image
Trying to build out the thin edges here to give it a more solid reinforced feel.

Image
This inner panel to the side of the mohawk was cast a little thin and I'm slightly concerned that come the chroming process it may not hold and warp slightly so I though applying a good layyer of filler behind it should make this more solid and re-inforce any potential piercings which could occur during my noob carlessness.

Image
Here it is drying out, gave it a little longer then the 8 minutes perscribed.

I have started the sanding process using the different grades of grit, this will however need a little more filling over some of the same areas to get my desired finish which as I'm sure you all know is the mind numbing part but an evil necessatie all the same.

More pics to follow
