HELP NEEDED Finding the correct fabric.

Post by nashslash » Thu Sep 24, 2009 7:26 am

Ok, I need some help here, I know what fabric is needed to complete my cylon as I have a sample of the correct fabric that was kindly given to me by CORA. I have searched high and low in the UK and have not been able to source the fabric here. I have even tried in the States to and ordered several samples from Denver fabrics on recommendation. The samples they sent through were not the correct type.

Therefore I am asking anyone in the know where I can buy the fabric to complete my cylon. I know several guys here have managed to complete there undersuit so I'm asking any of those where did you find the material. I really wanted to complete my cylon to a good standard and as close as possible to the original. But with the material. I'm stuck

Help me Obi-Wan Kenobi your my only hope ?

PM me or email me if you know where i can get it...

What is "the right" fabric called/know as, etc.?

I'll research it with my local fabric stores - there are two big ones near me (not Denver - other stores). If they don't stock it, perhaps they can order it. But I need to know what to ask for.

Just let me know, and I will go check! BY YOUR COMMAND

The original undersuit is made of heavy plum-colored lycra fabric, like the farbic used for swimsuits, etc.

The applications are made of silver-grey vinyl strengthened with buckram.

Please correct me if I'm wrong, Dale!

After I've given up the search to find a fabric which is accurate to the one they've used for the original costumes, I've found a fabric colored in aubergine, which gives a satisfactory match in my eyes.

I wish I could show it to you or send you a swatch, but all of it is at the seamstress right now, who'll make the undersuit for me (hopefully this year).

Cheers for the intel Red Eye. its the undersuit material im having the biggest problems with.. BUT, I have a piece of material given to me by CORA. So I know the approximate colour, the big problem is the weight of the material. I dont think anyone will ever 100% match the original colour.
What im looking for is a place to buy a good approximate of the colour and weight of the original.

Most companies dont have anything in that weight let alone anything in the approximate colour too.

I found some fabric online once real easy, and it was great. I search Google via images using the correct keywords. The 2nd time I wasn't as lucky and the color was off a bit. Don't hold your breath looking to find someone to do a dye batch of fabric for you with out having enough left over to make an other 5-6 suits. Also finding heavy gauge plum is much harder than than regular thickness. One thing you might want to think about is going the easy route, and using the regular thickness, and then back it with something else like buck rum to give it some support or maybe just double up the fabric. I would ask a expect about doing that.
