New Undersuit Project & Pattern...

Post by nashslash » Wed Jun 10, 2009 1:47 pm

I want to make a NEW undersuit for my Cylon. I have a Krap Circle and hate it. But I don't have a pattern to work from. after studying as many Cylon undersuit pictures as I could find. I decided to have a go at making an undersuit. It really is a question of trial and error here. first I drawn up a standard pair of trousers or pants if you're from the USA. I also bought some of the cheapest material I could find. it's going to be a case of make them modify them add bits to them until I'm happy .. and finally cut them up again until a have the Pattern for the complete undersuit. then I can find some proper material (if I can) and using the patterns I now would have made, re make the undersuit.
watch out for updates....

right I stitched the 4 parts together giving me a pair of trousers /pants. as mentioned before this is not the correct material and it is only patched stitched together. I cant believe it I actually made a pair of pants. next I need to tailor the pants to fit correctly, so far it's been totally guess work. after that I need to trim just above the waist and look at doing the belly to chest section ultimately where the ribbing will go.
As I said earlier in this topic. the goal for this is project is to produce a undersuit pattern.

OK, the time has come to continue thinking about the undersuit. Currently I am trying to source the correct material let alone the colour. Its a nightmare. I'm getting a few more samples sent through but if I can get the right material its going to be a question of dying it....

Anyhow. Following the procedures set out in this post

I decided to have a go at making the ribbing for my costume. Here are the results sorry about the edge on shot it well out of focus..

So far so good. To be honest the sewing is easy my machine has an attachment so it wont or cant stitch over the cord and keeps the spacing the same all along the welt.

The most laborious thing is cutting all the vinyl to the correct width and then adding the doudle sided tape.

What do you think so far guys?

I think it it is like every thing you work on - EXCELLENT!

When you have everything nailed down for a pattern I can help to digitize it. Would be easily done up to print out on tiled pages like you have done by hand. Yer ol' pal Cylon-Knight is ready to help if needed ;)

What kind of sewing machine do you have? Maybe something we - in the US could also get? Sounds like a good machine.

Now did you do this from photos of suits via screen caps, and you Krop or did you use anything else as a reference. Great start so far. Can't wait to see what becomes of this project blue suit. :-)

For the trouser/pants and the top I used this software to print out a basic pattern so that I could make them. I will heavily modify them once there made.

As for the Ribbing. I used your video Dale and the video I found on how to sew Welt cord. Since I have never done anything like this before. I went to my local material shop and bought some vinyl and some welt cord and decided to see how hard it was.

Since I found it not as hard as I thought it would be just laborious. I have ordered the correct welting which is a firmer plastic one 350 meters and 200 meters 4 rolls of double sided tape. Next time I make some more pipping I will make a video and upload it.

For reference I used just photos of the undersuit that I found in the gallery here. My Krop suit is gone, but I wouldn't use that as reference. Unless I was making a dog blanket....

John the sewing machine I have is a cheap one. Less than $100. make sure the machine you get has a

Ok, 1 week ago I thought the undersuit would be impossible for someone like me to make... after a little bit of reading on the web and a bit more experimenting using the samples I have been sent I stitched some ribbing into them.. here are the results.

The best material I have so far it the beige one. Its the exact weight of Lycra material but obviously needs dying. Sample I made with ribs

the second option I was thinking about would be a black undersuit. Using Lycra again
sample in black with ribs..

Please remember these are just samples and not finished to the correct spacing or finish

Man that is a great start. One down fall is that Lycra is very hard to dye. It is a synthetic fabric that just doesn't take dye very well, and matter of trivia the suits that got wet via chasing Starbuck in the water dyed the water purple/plum and the suits were the 1st ones to dry up and break apart.

I've start to make my undersuit and here is a video of how to make the RIB sections of the undersuit.
NOT as hard as you think it is really but very boring and tedious..
