Cylon Helmet Build in Leeds
Hi
First post. I am having a go at building an original Cylon helmet using the files from bazooka Jo. This is also the first time I have attempted a paper build. Here is what I have learnt so far.
Cutting.
It took us about three hours to cut out all the card using a craft knife. I found it easier to go through all the pieces of card cutting in one direction, then revolving the cards and cutting again in one direction. Took a long time to see results but feel this was quicker than cutting out each piece in turn.
Choice of Card.
I used 150 gram inkjet card from WH Smiths. Two problems I am finding with this card. It is too thin and also it is quite porous.
Glue
I work as a Jeweller and one of the things I pride myself on is not having any glue in my workshop. Furiously digging around old boxes I managed to find some mod podge from years ago. I started with this and it was a nightmare as it just soaked into the card and made bit of a mess. I managed to get from near by some elmers glue which worked well, but have some problems now where some pieces done with the Mod Podge are coming undone
Electronics
I only had 8 LEDs to hand but have done a quick test with an arduino to think about doing the larson scanner. I have only just started playing with an arduino and I amazed with the thing. I am hoping to come up with something that can do the scanner, sound effects and add some choose able voice commands
End of Build Part 1
Not as neat as I had hoped, But confident that as long as I have a good enough shape for when it comes to skimming it, I will be all right - its just going to mean more sanding - probably a lot!
It is also a tad too small, but I want to get end to end on the build first so I can understand all the issues I am going to face
Next Steps
Add Left Cheek piece
Add Visor
Add Grill
Seal Paper
Reinforce with masking tape
Seal Masking tape
Skin
File
Add resin
Fibre Glass
Chrome

Yeah, looks like a promising start to me.
Good luck with the rest and don't hesitate to ask any questions!
