Hand-Schaub's helmet resculpt

Post by Hand-Schaub » Tue Jul 19, 2011 12:30 pm

All right now... so I'm sick of Cylon helmets but I'm getting excited about them again because I like the way my refurbished sculpt is looking. I wanted to share progress shots before doing a final sanding and molding of it. So the basic concept was to re-skin the face and Mohawk. I wanted to raise the Mohawk because I believe the origin of the helmet I was using was a Battle of Galactica helmet and not a TV production one. That also made it so the mohawk was shorter than TV versions. If you dont have a screen used to compare then the difference is negligible but I wanted mine to be correct in that area.

So, I skinned the face with .03 sheet of styrene as pictured. I was able to deal with a few symmetry issues this way as well as give new sharp lines to the face.
The next shot shows some bondo and filling work
the next two show my stage one model to the original Gold guy. One thing of note is the cut of the mouth area on the gold guy (in comparison to pictures of other cylons it seems the gold guy has a larger 'moustache" So that is why mine is smaller
The last 3 frame shot shows it as it is this morning. - I dulled all the edged because they were too sharp. It's pretty smooth and ready to do another primer coat.
Future steps include sealing up the whole thing in order to mold it. I plan to make the gril separately and have it attach in after chroming.
I will mold it in silicone and cast it in perhaps SilCast resin? Actually this is the question I have - does anybody ahem - Skullbeast) have any advise for casting? I made a few clone helmets in Silcast and they worked out fine but I'm open for new techniques and products.

thanks for looking!

BJB 808 would be a great resin for that. You can rotocast by hand easily enough.
I would still laminate up epoxy resin. Bomb proof. Polyester is ok but nowhere as strong for the thickness I would prefer.

Ha - just PMed you!

uh - yeah - sort of. I made a few castings but the original I used has that narrowness to the sides which makes t a tight fit. . Not as clean as I would like. SO I'm just sitting on them and sulking a bit.

Would have to agree BJB makes some great tough stuff.
