As I have mentioned before I am a steampunker and I wanted to create a steampunk cylon..

Had a vision of mixing this

and this

and I give you the start of the worlds first Steampunk Cylon

basically the top part is a ww1 german pickelhaube have removed the top part of the cylon helm added in the pickelhaube over the top.. this will be a slow build as I work fly in fly out 2 weeks on site.. 1 week at home.. was hoping to have it done by the end of nov for brisbanes supanova but wont be finished by then..

and with any luck Kropserkl will finally send my cylon armor.. they are just a tad slow on getting it done.. been 2 months already

Very nice start!

So, for the final color - will you go typical Cylon silver or Gold/Copper? Or more of a Brass color?

I would opt for a dark bronze with an antiquing patina/weathering. Goes well with the steampunk earth tone aesthetic.

so.. things I have learned so far while working on this..

1 . Paper is more flexible then fibre glass :)
basically if your working with paper make sure you brace the bottom area where you put your head in.. I happily starting putting the resin around.. was fine.. then started to brace it in fibreglass on the inside.. low and behold it warped slightly so I couldnt get my head in there anymore LOL..

have cut this down and started reshaping it .. what i should have done is did it in two pieces first off.. the german helmet and the cylon part.. then joined them together once both where done (what I am doing now) live and learn :)

2 . Working with builders bog and fibreglass in the middle of the aussie summer makes thing set really really really fast .. the fibreglass not so bad.. the builders bog.. yeah.. that is a pain when your trying to shape..

3 . Dust.. when sanding everything back.. yeah the missus had something to say about that..

4 . do not put the cup your drinking from near the containers your washing your brushes out in.. I think you can figure out what happened here..

Use less hardener, especially on a humid day. Also what filler are you using. If you can get it buy some besacar fine filler. It sands really nice and doesn't go off as fast as standard filler. You will need to get it from an automotive paint supplier. Few places in Brisbane have it and also in Ipswich. Cheers Terry
