Last Day.
Capricorn 15's
Year of the City 2274.
Carousel begins...

If you know Logan's Run you'll remember the iconic hand sculpture seen at Arcade.
It only has two scenes - for just fleeting seconds each - in the movie as pure set decoration.
But is is one bad @$$ decoration!

I decided to make my own. And thought I would share the build now as it's quite far in.
:CK:

Image
Phase 1. Paper study.

Image
Phase 2. Cardboard. (Paper study is behind it.)
The fracking AWESOME Sand Man Deep Sleep pistol was made by Sean. *bows down*

Image
For the life clock in the palm. I figure at this point I'll use this glitter clay and sculpt one.
Still some time off for that, that's the plan for now.
The life clock on my build is 3 1/2 inches wide. BAM! :sunglasses:

Image
Obsessing over the shapes, with nothing for reference but the two dinky scenes.
The stand for the hand is not a simple pyramid. Phase 2's stand isn't as correct as it can be.
Pictured here is a small study of what will eventually be stand 2.5.
Realize Phase 2 hand has some issues to much of a pain to alter... 2.5 needed.

Image
The wrist. Even more mind bending.
I figured out the stand and wrist - but for now bumming my Phase 2 stand for a Phase 2.5 hand.

Image
New, and larger hand... BIG BOYS - BIG TOYS ;)

Image
Shapes... crazy... crazy... SHAPES.

Image
Here, I am giving you the finger.

Image
Opposite the thumb, more SHAPES.

Image
Fingers made.

Image
I've RENEWED my fingers!

Image
The fingers angle, trial and error. Guess and re-guess.

Image
Whooooooo

Image
Wheeeeeee

Image
Dream it.

Image
Do it.

Image
Did it.

Image
Ironically the hand stands exactly 30 inches tall... the exact age for Carousel!?!?
BUT - THERE IS NO SANCTUARY!

Hope you enjoyed!
Thinking of Phase 3 being done out of mirrored sheet styrene. Anyone ever ordered any?
I found some dealers online... still researching.

:byyourcommand:

P.S. 100,000 THANKS YOUS to Red Eye for Blu Ray caps of the movie. I only have the DVD version.
The HD caps helped A LOT. *bows down*

And I wondered about the status of this project the other day...

Now I know it's in full swing and I really love it so far!

Keep rockin' or should I say "Run, Runner!"

Great work. To bad Tom DeSanto never broke ground on the movie. He tried but just couldn't get it sold to the studio.

If you didn't hear, sad news for Sci-Fi...
Science-fiction writer George Clayton Johnson, who co-wrote the 1967 novel Logan's Run, died at age 86 on 12-27-2015 :(
He also wrote some classic Star Trek shows, Twilight Zone shows and more.

Oddly, I started to work on my Arcade Hand that same day before I heard the news. Here is the update:
Image
I cut apart the cardboard palm detail bits.

Image
Flipped them over. And outlined them on the back of the mirrored plastic.
Slow and steady. Scoring and scoring and scoring the plastic on the lines.

Image
Eventually you can see the cut about to come through the mirrored side.

Image
The parts all done and the protective cover taken off you can see this plastic is a true mirror. Love it.

Image
But, the plastic is thick. 0.06mm. They had 0.04 but I went for 0.06 to ensure the hand will be stable when done... as it will be so big.
Here is a stack of 5 sheets, you can see it's taller than my pencil.

Image
My cardboard hand has no real thickness the the parts. But this plastic has thick edges.
If I do nothing the seams would be ugly like this pic.

Image
I used sand paper at first, but then moved to my orbital sander to bevel the edges.

Image
Bevels.

Image
Nice, new, crisp seam with the bevels.

Image
Cut and glued up four bits so far. As this is hand made (PUN!) and some parts still are rather small, the seams are not 100% perfect, but I'm happy with them and still learning how to best make the parts. I started with the small parts to learn with. Then I'll move to the fingers, the palm, and the stand will be last.

Thanks for looking!

Love the update!

But I'm sorry to hear about the passing of Mr. Clayton.
