My 1:1 Scaled hybrid Viper

Post by GoldCylon » Sat Feb 09, 2013 5:40 pm

As some of you know I have a few screen used items mostly Galactica related, and a few other odds, and ends to boot. One of the larger pieces I have is a screen used cockpit from Space Above and Beyond. I also have the engine intake covers from the 2003 Mk II series Viper. Now since this is more a learning curve for me working with styrofoam this large scale I am perfect at this yet, but I started out making a engine above the top of the cockpit. I made a quick learning curve error and that is make smaller cuts over chucks. WIth that said everything else is coming along fine, and reapirs with foam is pretty easy. I have the basic shape so far, and it will be much deeper, but in these photos can't tell depth anyway. So here are a few photos.

So what is the gold of your project?
A FULL Viper - wings, landing gear, the WHOLE deal? Or are you going to make a section of it only? Or just poking around to learn how to work with foam?

The goal is just fun, and see what it goes, and also learning how to play with large scale foam projects. I found out already that spray paint on the foam doesn't really work. The areas I spray painted have dimples now. :erk:

Yeah, paint would sort of "eat" the foam I think. Maybe they make special foam paint?
Such a cool project to learn some new skills in a fun way - BRAVO! Looking forward to more. You have to get in and "fly" your ship when it's all done ;)

Looks very promising... good luck with it!

I am about ready to build a template to measure for correction around the sides, and top section. This will help me fill in the low areas, and also show where I need to take down the high areas. This is a step I have passed up already, but it is the current photo I have to share at the moment.

Thanks to Skullbeast for filling me in on the information on applying glue to the surface of the foam then a resin fiberglass coat on top to give it that hardshell it needs.
