I have been told what the material is but I am not a plastics guy so I don't recall the type used. It is not a painted plastic and has a bumpy surface on the inside. It is mostly a flat black and the electrical tape is a great match.

This may seem odd, is the black tape....
vinyl electrical tape or black gaffer's tape.
electrical tape
gaffer's tape

Gaffer's is a low tack cloth duck-tape type, often used in theator

It is electrical. The gaffers tape is used inside the helmet in a few places. Man that stuff is sticky.

What color black is it?
In the show, I see at times a flat black, other times a semi gloss with little reflection of the armour.
Perhaps Skullbeast can help out here?

Special NOTE !!!
Due to a unknown flaw of the chips in the zeta rifle light controller, It is strongly recomended to add a on/off switch or remove the battery if not in use. The chip power consumption continues even when the trigger is not used.

Goldcylon,
I tripped and fell on my rifle, the bayonet popped out and I scratched the detail side panels.
Not to mention the pain, note to self, a tee shirt don't give much padding.

You aren't alone. If you scan back ground stills or screen caps of Cylons and their rifles after the 1st few hours of the show you will see broken rifles. The prop repair guys got tired of fixing them, and a way to save a few bucks in the budget also.
