Yeah this is pretty cool but unfortunately they were not able to remaster the models very much so will have to wait-and-see type of thing. Although the live-action looks great.

Wonder what the difference is between them?

10 more disks in the red one... WOW.
You could put a CRAZY amount of stuff on 18 blurays!?!
Certainly going to buy it.

Based on what I've seen the "Remastered" version expands the picture so that it fills the screen of a wide-screen HD TV. Unfortunately, this results in the cutting off in the top and bottom of the 4:3 aspect-ratio picture that was originally designed for NTSC TV's. Kind of like an inverse-letterbox. The picture is bigger, but I think it will only serve to show us just how grainy the film was they used back then, rather than show hidden never-before-noticed details. If I'm getting anything it will be the red one.Cylon-Knight wrote:Wonder what the difference is between them?
Either way, I don't think Universal spent the money to put out a set that came anywhere near close to the TOS Trek re-mastering with either version, which it desperately needs.

Re: Original Series on Blu-Ray on 5-12-2015! (Red= Definitive, and Grey= Remastered!)
I got the German Blu-ray (BD) back in January 2014 (it was the impetus for me to join this forum) which is a superb set. The only downside is the fact the German subtitles on the extras are unremovable on discs 2-9. But, that's OK because I still have my 2003 US Cylon head DVD set when I want to watch the extras; far too much nostalgia attached to it to get rid of it.
It also has the wonderful 2003 convention footage DVD (disc 10) which is missing from all of the subsequant BG BD sets (UK, USA).
I have no use for the wretched widescreen versions which are apparently missing bits of footage here and there.

Only for the redundant widescreen version of The Magnificent Warriors; true buffs will favour the definitive 1.33:1 (full frame) versions anyway and will save money by buying the UK set, or preferably the German BD set. The latter has an exclusive DVD of Galacticon 2003 convention footage (approximately 3 hours worth) of the cast and crew; excellent.
The full-frame Region 'B' sets are much cheaper than the US set which has both widescreen (ugh) and full frame (yay). Unfortunately, the widescreen versions have also had a modern teal-based colour scheme as well as cropping visual information off the top and bottom of the original frames; by compensation a tiny amount of extra picture is revealed at the sides, but it was not meant to be seen by the original film makers. Sadly, in the US the more common edition is the widescreen version which has (I suspect) a greater production run and as a result may become the default version.
EDIT (June 6th 2017) prices below have been updated:
The UK set (most likely either Region Free or it's 'B' locked, unconfirmed) is £20 (= $25.81) on UK Amazon.

The German set (confirmed as Region 'B' locked) is €34.97 (= $39.44) on German Amazon (contains the extra Galacticon 2003 DVD).
http://www.amazon.de/Kampfstern-Galacti ... actica+blu
The US set is currently $72.99 on US Amazon (contains the theatrical version of Saga of a Star World available seperately in all territories worldwide).

I bought the UK set last year and it works fine on a Region-A player. It's still listed as "[Region Free]" and I can corroborate that. They did a very good job with the transfer.
Looked over the deleted scenes again not too long ago and I still cringe when the "hymn" scene comes up in the main meeting hall (I think from SoaSW). My God that was horrible - so glad it was cut!

Is that a good price? It seems a bit high to me.

EDIT: Prices changed as of June 6th 2017
€34.97 = $39.44 for a ten disc set (9 BDs + DVD of 2003 convention footage) - not including postage of course. When I bought it in December 2013 it cost me about €55.00.
Remember, that is for all of Battlestar: Galactica (1978-79) and Galactica: 1980 (1979-80). You also get all of the extras on the UK and US sets plus 3 x 30+ minutes German super 8 digests of the three theatrical BG films + the tenth disc of 2003 convention footage (over 3 hours). The down side is that on the extras only (bar the convention disc which is English friendly), the German subtitles are not removable unless you have a player that has been tricked to bypass player limitations. But if (like me) you have the Cylon Head complete series DVD from 2003 then you have all of the extras sans German subs already.
