Undersuit Grey Fabric

Post by Lt Rhea » Mon Mar 14, 2011 4:00 pm

I found this "gunmetal" grey vinyl material and also a swatch of some stretch vinyl which is thinner. What do you all think of the color? Is this good for the undersuit? I was thinking of using the vinyl for the body "armor" and the thinner stretch material (the swatch) for the piping. Do you think they look close enough to look okay, or should I just use one of them?

I took a picture of them with the lycra undersuit material for color reference. I took one with flash and one without.

Undersuit Grey Fabric

They both look the same to me on my mobil but one thing I can say is they look great for a vintage Cylon. The color fade is dead on.

photographically it looks great! I'm even thinking of going the greyish route versus the purple route because it seems more universal.

Excellent find!

Good luck with your undersuit.

Lt Rhea, I'd say the Cylon02.jpg would be better. It looks great. Where did you find the fabric???

Both pictures are of the same thing, just flash on or flash off. I found the grey vinyl at my local Field's Fabrics, the stretch vinyl came from a place in New York that specializes in spandex...can't recall offhand the name, I'll dig it out and post it later. The lycra was purchased by my friend who also had it custom dyed. I don't have any idea where he got it, or where he had it dyed.

The stretch vinyl does scratch easily though. My sample of it already has an accidental fingernail scratch, and I keep my nails nearly as short as a guy's. So, I don't think I'd want to use it as the body armor pieces, but I think it will work great for the piping. I need to do a test sewing with it to be sure.

Oh much (yards) of each fabric do you think a suit will need?

I haven't figured that out yet. I'm not sure how many yards of the lycra my friend got, but I'd guess it is about 5 or 6 yards. The vinyl...I have no idea how much all that piping will "eat" up. I'd guess that 3 or 4 yards would be enough??

I hope it looks fantastic when I'm done! I know it will be a loooong process, though.

I think it can be done in a few months...

But not if you're working for Shadow Dale... then it takes over a year!

I hope it doesn't take me a year! I do have a long sewing queue, but I try to be upfront and honest with people if it is taking longer. My full-time job as mom and housewife takes first priority before the seamstressing...so sometimes I can be slow going.
