When the Cylon rescue patrol is on the way to look out for Cy and the other two pilots, the Centurion in the middle (I guess it's the group leader) is missing one of his belt boxes.

Check out the screencap and see for yourselves:

What are those boxes supposed to be, anyway?
These caps were designed to go over the camera man's belt to make it look more futuristic.

Having a plain black belt without any fancy 70's bling bling on it would have been boring, wouldn't it?

They were fastened with velcro on the inside so they could remove them quite easily if the batteries inside would be needing a recharge, which they did quite often. Once the electronics for the eye scanner were tucked in, the batteries allowed approx. 30 minutes of filming time before a recharge was needed again.

So the belt boxes were actually concealing the batteries and electronics for the eye scanner?

I don't suppose they had an in-universe explanation for what they were supposed to be?

They were simply placed over the black leather battery cells of the belt.

Here's a photo of an unaltered belt again:

I don't think they had anything like that in mind. I rather think they just thought "Hey, wouldn't it look great to have some chromed caps onto these belts?" and *Poof*... there they were!

I see. But in the costume, the battery belt was powering the eye scanner?

That is correct.

In certain scenes (like this one from "Return of Starbuck") you can even see the plug and wiring:

My biggest complaint about the episode is that it was the last episode. it always felt as if it was supposed to be part one of a two-parter and part 2 would have Starbuck find the fleet and Earth
(and then cash in on the coffee house boom!)
I mean, he had a way off that barren rock when the cylon rescue party arrived they were all dead and their ship was left behind. it may have been difficult but if anyone could have managed to pilot a three-man ship solo it would be Starbuck
my other complaint is the fact that they chopped the episode down for the DVD release. The VHS version of the episode seems to be complete and then when i watched it from the Galactica 1980 DVD several parts were cut out. (such as Starbuck yelling at the three "dead" Cylons (which was included in the Episode primer before the credits!)

Really? I'll have to compare those.
