1980? What about 69 and time?

Post by johnnybear » Wed Jun 28, 2017 3:03 pm

I venture that the Galactica and the fleet must have either gone faster than the speed of light to escape from their pursuers to arrive at the earth in the opening episode of Galactica 80 after receiving the Apollo signal in Hand of God or they went back in time and had a longer trip than was necessary! Troy's age would be thirty I guess and as Boxey maybe seven or eight or even younger, so that means the whole voyage may have taken twenty to twenty five earth years but if Hand of God was at the end of the first or second year in space, and the signal only recently sent then ten or eleven years was a greater difference to the crew of The Galactica than it would be to the peoples of the earth! :frack:

Agree, that "Hand Of God" episode's NASA Apollo transmission would in fact mean that Galactica:1980 was only about one decade away.

So, it is a major gaffe. :censored:

Maybe a time warp "science-fiction" excuse will help. They can explain it away by saying that the NASA Apollo transmission passed through a temporal rift from twenty years in the future meaning at the time "Hand Of God" happened it was around 1949 Earth year. Although, it originated from a future Earth year of 1969.

Shame they didn't set the series in 1990 instead!

Agree, they should have arrived in 1990. They probably did not to avoid budget limitations if they had to depict changes made ten years out as Gerry Anderson's UFO(1970-1973) did depicting it's 1980 setting.
If, as you suggested, they arrived in 1990 and then used their time traveling Vipers to go back to 1980 to visit Earth ten years before the Cylon fleet arrives following their Colonial fleet in 1990 to prepare the Earth's defense...
I loved the 2-seat time-warping Viper complete with both forceshield invisibility and a flying Turbine stored in it's carghold. I think that the Galactica:1980 series should have been about Colonial Vipers time traveling to explore Earth's history [and chase Xavier or a Cylon(s)] as was established in the pilot "Galactica Discovers Earth", but sadly abandoned.

Agreed, Steve! I wonder if part of the problem with Xavier might have been Richard Lynch being reluctant to return to the role? Strange how he was only in the first story and the character returns later on now being played by Jeremy Brett! Was there any backstage problems that we don't know about?

Since the Galactica:1980 pilot "Galactica Discovers Earth" episodes that he was in were definitely filmed in 1979, it looks like Richard Lynch might have not been available because he made three films in 1979 that came out 1980 or simply because the network told Larson to drop the exciting time travel Xavier theme for a more mundane super scouts theme.

Yuck! I don't like that idea at all! I was thinking more of a Count Iblis influence upon Commander Cain rather than him as a Cylon duplicate! And Sheba dying is not a good way to start a second season in my book!! :frack:

Agree with you johnnybear, season two that way would have been too dark. :frack:

Okay, Steve! The second season sounded a bit too dark for me as well! The series was good as it was and should have kept to that! Is there any fan theories as to what happened to Apollo, Sheba and Tigh? :byyourcommand:

Killed in action or missing in action like Starbuck, sadly. The dialogue that Adama stated was vague, but I would surmise one of those.

Yeah that's what I've always suspected too but somehow I think Apollo left the Galactica on a mission of his own!

Agree, they should have stated that in the script to leave it open for Richard Hatch's return as Apollo as a regular cast member if the series lasted into season three. :sunglasses:

It seems bad that the journey to find earth cost the lives or the known safety of so many of the original characters and for Adama his only son! I know they probably would have addressed this issue eventually if the show had continued but it still stinks...

Agree. If ABC had not delayed a second season, then I think Richard Hatch(Apollo), Dirk Benedict(Starbuck- more than the one episode) and the majority of season one cast would have arrived at Earth for season two. Like SPACE:1999, we got disappointed with a second season major cast change.
