replica gloves

Post by groupleaderzeta » Sun Apr 03, 2016 10:58 am

This tutorial is for making a version of cylon gloves, With a requirement to be more usable and give more flexibility. These are NOT 1:1 accurate.

The information contained in this tutorial is for general information purposes only. I make no representations or warranties of any kind, express or implied, about the completeness, accuracy, reliability, suitability or availability with respect to the products or the techniques contained in this tutorial for any purpose other than stated. Any reliance you place on such information is therefore strictly at your own risk. Please follow all safety guidelines and use instructions that come with your tools. I will present this tutorial in 4 parts.

NOTE..If you can find black XXL Deerskin gloves you can skip Part2.

Part 1.. Tools and supplies.

supplies..
XXL deerskin work gloves
Heel&toe shoe dye
Eva foam floor mats
Weldwood contact cement
Flexidip (plastidip)
flat black paint
Rubbing alcohol

Tools..
nitrile gloves
18mm Box cutter w/ extra blades
Stiff Ruler
Cloth ruler
Pencil
Rotary tool w/320 grit drum sander
320 sandpaper
Bucket of plain warm water
Paper towels
Cutting mat
Heat gun

Part 2.. Dying of deerskin gloves.
What you will need...
Image

Step 1.. Lay down a couple layers of paper towels to protect the work surface. put on your nitrile glove (more resistant to dye).
Image

Use paper towel and rubbing alcohol to thoroughly clean deerskin gloves. Use paper towels to dampen the gloves with water, they will turn brown from yellow in my case, do not saturate to the point of water runs out of them. This will open the pours to get dye to go deeper.

Step 2..
Image

Shake dye and use as directed on bottle. Let dry one hour between applications.
It will take several applications to get a even black color.
After second application.
Image

After 4 applications.
Image

Step 3..
Let dry for minimum 24 hours.

Step 4..
Inspect gloves for any yellow or tan showing reapply dye if needed and let dry.

Next installment will be cutting the EVA foam parts.

Cool idea. I have authentic gloves, but they really are quite stiff.

In the final episode you can see clearly a different type of glove being used when the Cylon is climbing down the ladder in the central core of the base ship.

They look like drivers gloves, so if anyone can ID them then we will be Cylon active strong. Thanks Red Eye for the picture. :cylongold:

I think those are "stunt" gloves for the climbing. Once he's on the ground he has the hockey gloves again.

They were. Imagine climbing down a ladder with such chunky gloves like the original Cooper Armadillo gloves...

Part 3.. Cutting and finishing EVA foam parts.

Please note.. To make things simple I will only show directions for the Left gauntlet only.
It will be helpful to lay out your parts as in this pic.
Image

What you will need...
NOTE.. Blades will dull quickly, have extras handy.
Image

Step 1.. Refer to the the diagram below for measurements of the varous parts. Cut them to size (Remenber you will need double of all parts). NOTE.. Reverse the thumb parts for the right glove.
Image

Step 2.. Using a rotory tool clean and sand the edges. Add a chamfer to the top corners. You can round the finger tips if you wish.
Image

Step 3. Use the heat gun on low heat to seal the foam. DO NOT over heat or the foam will melt. The foam will take on a slight glossy finish.

Step 4.. Coat all parts with 6 light coats of the plastidip (flexidip), to seal the foam before painting. Allow around 30 min to dry between coats. Make sure foam is sealed, add more coats if needed. Let dry over night.
Note.. DO NOT seal the bottom of the foam parts.
Image

Step 5.. Paint the foam with 5 to 6 light coats of the flat(or gloss if you want) black paint. Allow around 15 min to dry between coats, add more coats if needed. Let everything dry over night.

Next installment will be Putting it all together.

With this Eva foam parts being used I feel a action style Cylon design is needed. Great work. :cylongold:

Great work, Zeta. You've made a wonderful mix of original look, with more functionality. A standard/stunt hybrid! LOVE IT.
