daggit ear

Post by Hand-Schaub » Fri Apr 22, 2011 1:59 am

So I did a bit of looking and thinking tonight about the daggit ears. I did notice a few things that perhaps those of you who saw it in Seattle can either verify or rectify my thoughts.

I mocked up a super quick ear out of paper and wire just to illustrate my point. NO measurements were made or assumed. All I know is that the hole from the model kit is around 1.25inches or there-a-bout.

The images are labeled and somewhat self explanatory. The fir and inner silver fabric need to be sew together like a sleeve - those of you who sew can easily understand the extra material needed to make a "sock" sort of item.

Second picture shows how they basically line up.

Third shot show how it goes together. The sleeve made with the fir and silver would have some thin batting in it while the ring might be a bit stiffer (foam?).
I noticed a wire mesh dome used which is inserted inside the ear. This would add a rigid base to help support the inside ear from caving in.

Looking at pictures I do notice fir sneaking between the wire which leads me to believe that the wire is added last and simply glued around. Seeing that the ears only spin this would not cause any stress therefore tacked glue would do the trick. Grey paint seems to be used on the wire as is evident by paint remnants on fir.

The studio pictures I am refering to are from Lt Rhea and can be found here:

So... what do you guys think?

Interesting. I was thinking formed plastic as the base. The wire would make it much easier to bent on the mounted servo. My phone doesn't do justice to many photos. I'll comment from a PC.

Good work so far!

I think it will make a pretty nice Daggit ear.

Yeah, that basic idea looks great. I wonder what the mesh was from originally...some sort of microphone, speakers, sink drain...

I worked on my version today to try my luck to see what I could come up with. I totally blew it on the scale. I over sized it with out converting it down with side pieces. Sorry no photos. I am pleased with it expect the scale.

OK I re-sized the ear now have this to start with to see if it will work. I used .08 styrene with a thick stranded wire I hot glued along the edges. Off the shelf primer gray, with a matte finish to coat the paint so it won't rub off.

Thank you very much. here is a photo with the fabric that will go on the inside. The back side is the fur that I just don't have my hands on yet.

Looks good - I'm still thinking that the mesh should be larger. It seems that it should be nearly the size of your servo wheel.

The size of the screen mess the size of the servo wheel seems like a good idea, and a base for its mount. I'll have to search around for some screen that I can cut up, and work with. The photo below is the rejected ear, at least I think a tad to big, and also shows my over gluing with the hot glue gun.
Also you can see a yellow strip of the tape on the base I have been using for the ear base. That is the mark I am going to use to cut off using it for the eyes.

I think actually having fur on it will change the look of it too, because fur will "bulk" it up quite a lot. I do think the screen should be larger, and I think it was sort of domed...?

When the fur is glued down on the back side, and the silver material is applied on the front side it will fill out a bit. If it doesn't look right then I'll size it up a bit more. Also the flop of the ears after looking at many photos it doesn't have a set pattern on how they are folded. It is more the builders discretion.
