ANYONE MADE A RAZOR CYLON LIFE SIZE STATUE?

The TV movie based on the re-imagined Battlestar Galactica - the story of the Battlestar Pegasus several months prior to it finding the Galactica.

Time for another update on my air compressor.

Tank is fully painted, looks brand new. Fridge compressor/motor is mounted on custom mounting bracket. All cleaned up and wiring checked. Small air filter placed on inlet....actually a small car fuel filter, works great. Cut, extended and brazed copper tubing, and mounted to air tank. Used a small length of rubber hose to connect to tank. First rubber hose blew up when compressor reached 100PSI. Scared the :frak: out of me. My ears are still ringing.....So used a car fuel injection hose instead....now no problems whatsoever.

So how does it run??

Turn it on and the sound of complete silence greets you....I kid you not, there is not a sound coming from the unit. If you listen very, very closely, you can just make out a slight humming sound. The gauge takes about a minute or so to hit 110PSI when the unit switches off. When the pressure drops to 80PSI, it starts up again.

And what about the heat that I was concerned about? Glad to say that it hardly heats up. It's only running for a minute or so. The heat that I was concerned about previously was because I left the unit running for several minutes without stopping. And it wasn't really hot, just very warm, you could still touch it.

This is without doubt a very worthwhile project if you use a compressor indoors. It is completely silent so will not bug the crap out of everyone in the middle of the night. My airbrush spray booth makes a lot more noise than my compressor.

So how much did it cost?

Second hand compressor from ebay (6 litre air tank capacity) $49.00
Fridge compressor/motor $FREE :D
1 rattle can of spray paint $3.20
Hose 1m length (hose blew up) $4.49
Automotive hose 1m length (enough for 3 or 4) $12.95
Hose clamps $3.99
Air filter $2.99
Rubber insulators $4.60
Aluminium angle for mounts (expensive, but I was desperate) $13.24
TOTAL $94.46

Yeah, I probably coulda bought a brand new compressor for that, but it wouldn't be a completely silent one now would it?
So that's it. Project finished. Now for the next project. Perhaps the vacuformer?? We'll see.

Oh, and the beer's there as a size comparison ;)

I am modifying the plastic cover that was originally on the air compressor to fit over the fridge motor. I will get that done in the next day or so and post some pics up. The above pics are without the cover so you can see the 'guts' of the unit.

Now, where did I put that beer.....

cheers

Did some specs on the unit. I timed with a stopwatch how long it took the compressor to reach pressure at every 10 PSI. Here are the results:

10psi 0:19 secs
20psi 0:39 secs
30psi 0:57 secs
40psi 1:17 secs
50psi 1:37 secs
60psi 1:58 secs
70psi 2:18 secs
80psi 2:40 secs
90psi 3:05 secs
100psi 3:28 secs
110psi 3:48 secs

I did the test a couple of times and the results were within about 5 secs of this.

As you can see, it takes about 20 secs per 10psi.

Extremely quiet.....very happy and satisfied with this project. I highly recommend anyone to do this if they are sick and tired of the constant buzzing and rattle of their air compressor.

Here is a pic with the cover on. Check out my photostream to see some battle damaged cylon raiders....some pretty cool stuff.

Would be great to see a finished "Razor" version as well...

On a guy in that picture, I'm on of Doug Drexler's thousands of "friended" fans on facebook, the guy is responsive to questions and takes the time to answer them.
