Forum Spam

Post by GoldCylon » Sat Nov 01, 2008 7:33 pm

Hey everyone I am being over run with SPAMMERS signing up with false email address, so they can't post, nor can anyone see their add links in their profile. I am working on trying to limited fake spam names being signed up. That is one reason the sight was down a few days on late Oct 2008. The site didn't crash, or have problems, just being trying to see if a few days with the sire down these guys might move on, but they didn't. I'll be be taking stronger measures over the next few days, or week to put a stop to this. The current users that are active members will NOT be effected, but maybe a delay in letting new members become active. I hope this will be resolved in a few days. Just a inside note that these (or single) people are on ComCast out of Boston MA.
Dale

Thanks for the update, and all you do on the site GoldCylon.

Shame on the spammers... we are going to have to send a few raiders to Boston to "reduce" spammers ;)

Dale, all of these or any of these mods can be applied to your forums. I have done many forums myself so if you need any help in implementing any of them let me know...

This is the one though that will catch nearly all the Bots I guarantee it..

I have used this myself and it works..

Thanks Nash, I'll look into it. One step I was thinking about was closing off membership sign ups directly. The user would have to email me a request with WHY details on letting them become a member, and I would make the account for them, but I research these links.
Thanks again

The only think about completely closing the automated rehister process is that it unfortunately puts people off registering. If you have an Admin activation the it means you also constantly get bombarded with rogue emails yourself.

Thanks for the update. I was wondering why my favorite forum was down for a while.

Good luck!

lol - the pics are not yet re-posted... the Gallery had a major update. The pics are around, I'll see about adding them... there is no post limit to see them, more-so, keeping kids out and what not.

But, that is one lucky Cylon ;)
