Ah, sort of like nuBSG's Raptors, but no FTL.
Cool stuff.

More of just a simple "Space Sedan" - simple transportation. Nothing as capable as a Raptor.

ARGO CLASS LIGHT BATTLESTAR

SPARTA CLASS LIGHT BATTLESTAR

During the early years of the war the Colonial could not produce the massive Battlestars to keep up with the need at the front and for combat losses plus the limited shipyard facilities large enough to assemble one of the COLUMBIA CLASS sized Battlestars was at a premium thus causing a bottleneck in the amount of new tonnage being built.

To get more warship hulls under construction a new design was put forward for a smaller Battlestar that could still operate effectively with the fleet but it's smaller size would enable it to be built in civilian shipyards that had previously only built merchant shipping. Developed from a cruiser design much in the way the first Battlestars were - the ARGO & SPARTA Classes were great successes and help stem the tide of the Cylon advance into Colonial space. As more of the full sized Battlestars came into service many of these ships were diverted to preforming escort for landings and commando strikes as well as still working alongside the big units in the regular Battle Groups.

Really enjoying these designs, Tinman. Were you ever planning on doing multiple views eventually, like dorsal, fore and aft elevations?
I may appear unoccupied to you, but at the molecular level, I'm really quite busy.

Tks, coming from YOU that means alot! Some of your old drawings of BSG subjects got me into drawing this ships to start with. :salute:

One of the reasons I haven't so far is that most of these designs aren't 100% mine. They were kindly donated for me to use in a "Warbook" I am building for a background in a set of stories I plan on writing when I get the time. I have been putting together ideas and add notes every now and then when I come up with something.

I have a few more Misc designs I want to get done for the Warbook then I might work on some more detailed 3-views.

SHEPHERD CLASS ESCORTSTAR
Image
Not long after the start of the first Cylon War, the Colonial Fleet was finding itself very spread out and in need of more warships than were currently being or could be produced by the regular fleet yards. In an attempt to bring more fighter carriers into service as quick as possible, a specification for a multipurpose, "bare basic" warship of a standard design that could be built by the civilian shipyards not currently in use throughout the Colonies.

An independent Caprican company, in need of contracts and money, approached the high command with a proposal. They had all six of their slipways open, but the problem was they weren't long enough to build anything on the measure of the great Battlestars then under construction. The Caprican Spacedock and Shipbuilding Corp. offered the solution to put their slipways into use for the Fleet by building an entirely new kind of ship to fit the specification. They would take a standard COLUMBIA CLASS Battlestar's landing bay & hangar pod - fit it with engines, operating & living spaces for the crew and airwing - and, they promised to deliver the first of the new warships by the end of the year.

The company was able to pull off the "miracle" and delivered the ship 13 days ahead of the promised schedule, payment being contingent upon completion of the project on time. She was presented to the fleet for testing the next day. At the time, she was the first Colonial warship to put to space unnamed - only known by her construction number 458990. The CS&S, bet the entire company fortune on this wild private venture. The Fleet was very impressed with the company that had never before built any kind of warship, they had delivered the ship in prime condition, under budget and on time. The Fleet only had to work out a few system bugs with the new design.

In service the unnamed ship (by now being called a "Escortstar") performed well on her shakedown cruise. Her smaller size made her more agile then the standard Battlestar or Heavy Cruiser though she was much slower. Her main strength was that she could provide fighter coverage on numerous missions where it wasn't practical to having a Battlestar or even a Cruiser present - such as the very important job of escorting convoys. Also as an added "plus," she could still operate with the fleet if needed. The fleet felt these advantages outweighed her downsized Viper strength.

Upon the results of the shakedown and her first cruise....the Colonial Fleet issued a contract for 12 of the now named SHEPHERD CLASS Escortstars, all to be built by Caprican Spacedock and Shipyard. However, the company had since the launching, been forced into bankruptcy. To deliver the original ship fully operational and ahead of schedule to the Fleet had cost the company almost everything it had or could scrape up. As the Judge was about to sign a court order to start liquidating the company, the Colonial Fleet announced it was purchasing the 11 other ships and gave the contract to the CS&S.

CHEETAH CLASS FAST PATROL CRUISER
Image

This is a Specialized Light Cruiser design used by the Colonials to patrol large tracks of space in advance of the Fleet or Convoys. With their high-powered engines vs. the light mass hull ratio makes them able to chase down any similar sized warship or have the capability to run from anything that she can't fight. This gives the CHEETAH CLASS a very decided edge in any single ship vs. ship duel she engages in.

She has an airwing of the following:
4x Asp Mk.II Point Defense Fighters
2x Alpha Class Shuttles
4x Micro-Shuttles

* This design is one of the "Classic BSG" designs drawn by Steve Wilson. The above drawing is basically just Mia_36's repainted to match the others and with a mid-ships hangar I added.

OSIRIS CLASS BATTLECRUISER
Image

Of Piconese origin, the six Battlecruisers of the OSIRIS CLASS was a pre-unification design that had just finished construction prior to the outbreak of the Cylon War. As such the original design did not incorporate much in the way of the ability to carry fighter sized craft - having only a small hangar amid-ships. Instead it was a design that depended more on it's impressive battery of Turbo-Laser Cannons for ship to ship combat.

It did however provide the newly formed Colonial Fleet with a warship that could (for the early war period anyway) take on the heaviest Cylon Warships unless a Basestar with it's massed waves of fighters became involved. It also provided a valuable testbed for many of the technologies that were to be incorporated into the then building great Battlestars.

The OSIRIS CLASS Battlecruisers were generally used as the core element of the Fleet's Heavy Battle Groups.

As the war continued on, the need for anything that could carry fighters was greatly felt by the Colonials. Due to the Cylon's new tactics it was determined that it was critical to upgrade the design or the whole class would guickly be lost due to combat attrition before they could ever engage the enemy. As soon as room was available in the shipyards, units of the class were pulled off the battleline and fitted with a single Battlestar sized flight pod on the center-line. As the rebuilt ships (now known as the OSIRIS CLASS - MOD.II) reentered service, the original versions were relegated to escorting Battlestars, while the upgraded MOD.II versions took their places as the core of the Battle Groups. Later, as the more powerful TIGER CLASS Destroyers took over the head of the Battle Groups, the OSIRIS CLASS ships continued on with the valuable multipurpose ability of providing fighter cover for the group but still able to bring their formidable guns and missiles to bear on the enemy if needed.

DESIGN NOTE: The Battlecruiser OSIRIS (pre-rebuild to MOD.II design) was one of the first ships in the Colonial Fleet to carry the new ASP Mk.I Point-Defense Fighter - the ship being specially modified to operate the type even before the fighter had "Officially" entered service.

ADAMANT CLASS ASSAULTSTAR

The Assaultstar is used to transport the Marines and all their equipment to a landing site and support them while there. The ship's Airwing is also dedicated to supporting the Marines on the ground.
