In praise of the Basestar
Once in a while I just have to marvel at what a brilliant design the Basestar is. Elegantly simple genius. Just the classic flying saucer stacked two deep. It's a thing of beauty. I'm envious of the model Adama keeps in his quarters.

Agreed.
It looks sooo much better than the ugly design they used in the RDM version.

Re: In praise of the Basestar
Now a question is occurring to me... The throne room isn't a standard feature of the Basestar, is it? I guess they're typically commanded by a Gold Cylon who sits in the control room, right?

Right. I think the typical setting of a Basestar would be the command chamber as seen in "The Hand of God".
The throne room is a special feature for the Imperious Leader (and Baltar respectively).

Thanks! They knew how to appeal to the human ego.

Right. Another hint that they aren't ordinary machines.

Re: In praise of the Basestar
Now I'm wondering why Baltar was hanging out in the command chamber during some of the later episodes. Must have gotten too lonely in the throne room. Kinda stark decor in there, too. I guess there's no place in the Cylon Empire you can shop for posters.

Re: In praise of the Basestar
I've always wondered what exactly Baltar did at the top of that plinth? The Imperious Leader probably shut himself down while not in use and was protected at the top of the column but surely for Balty it was a bit boring on his own up there?

Not very menacing in is look it sure does not have the look of greetings does it. A well suited design of the times then, and now.

It's always a pleasure to see the one and only screen-used Basestar filming miniature!

Classic!
I personally much prefer the original vs the new triangle style.

Re: In praise of the Basestar
The newer version was just a poorly created CGI disaster where as the original was a piece of crafted genius! The work done on the old series took ages to achieve I'm sure with real models and special effects where as the computers do all the work these days and not very well and convincing at that!
