Pegaus Helmet horse or unicorn

Post by mrmovieprop » Mon Feb 02, 2009 6:16 am

Is the Pegasus Helmet crest a flying horse or a flying unicorn with horn?
Anyone have any good pictures of this.

Good question, with such little screen time it is a tricky thing to spot!

Pegasus is taken from the Greek - Pegasus the winged horse, not a Unicorn. The first link you posted has the full head showing on the helmet - you can see the mane. I can see how it is a bit horn shaped, but it is a mane - not a horn.

I was shown the model box lid that the horse model came from. I believe from memory it is a Pegasus flying winged horse. If I recall the neck was cut off, and then the wings clued to the side of the neck area.

At the risk of veering off topic, the comments on the meaning of Pegusus had me recalling a song from 1974 'I am Pegasus', (my name means horse). Whilst preceeding the original Galactica by four years I don't have to stretch my mind to have the words apply to Battlestar Pegasus and its crew - the is even a reference to Sagittarius!

If you are curious you can listen to the song on Youtube here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IFXYjp_Mlb8
A nice example of Aussie music from the '70s

Now to get the thread back on track here is something I found on Wikipedia: 'Viper pilots from the Pegasus' Silver Spar Squadron, wore a helmet design that bore a 'flying horse' unlike the Galactica's Blue and Red Squadron pilots falcon/eagle crest Viper helmets, due to the Pegasus' own namesake'.

One of the original designs that I have posted a photo in the gallery, just I don't recall the location at the moment to post the link is a Viper (aka snake) attached to the helmet in place of the bird.

I believe that Atlantia's patch was somewhat visible in the original episode where the fleet is wiped out.
I am fairly confident that the only viper helmets seen on the screen belonged to Pegasus and Galactica. So you can probably go with your own interpretation there.
