Greetings fellow Warriors!

I hope this newsletter finds you well this summer. I’m sure you’ve all noticed by now that we’re kicking things into full gear this month. If you haven’t been by the message board in a while make sure to drop in. There has been a lot of changes recently including a few new sections.

Make sure to get your location queries in so we can get all of you sorted into your proper Divisions. The next year is going to be a busy one as we establish local chapters (“Flights”). We’re aiming for Comic Con 2011 for our big debut and competition with the Cylon Empire (http://www.byyourcommand.net). Both groups are aiming for 30 members in full uniform/armor. It is going to be quite a gathering so make sure to get your uniforms sorted out and make plans to join us in San Diego!

As for this year’s Comic Con, I will be there with flyers to promote Blackstar. If any of you care to join me say the word and I will bring a stack for you! Following Richard Hatch’s annual panel we will be meeting up in the Sails Pavilion for a quick meet and greet and hopefully some pictures!

http://www.Battlestargalactica.org has new uniforms in stock! They have made several improvements to this batch including darker material for the Battle Jackets and heavier interfacing.

Elections will begin in September so now is the time to check out what positions is available. If you’re interested in running for a position within the club or would like to apply for a Flight Leader position drop us a line at blackstarsquadron@gmail.com.

I am including the first official draft of the “Colonial Warrior Costume Reference Library (CRL)”. This will serve as our standardized guideline for uniform requirements. It is also a fantastic resource for those of you who are looking to make the uniform yourself. Many thanks to Rachel (Mieal Deneb), our squadron Quartermaster, Jason (Gee2), Ed (Reaper) and John (Kronus) for all of the hard work.

Together we went through more revisions than I can list in order to make sure that we covered as much as possible. Other uniform standards will follow including dress uniform and bridge officers, but we wanted to get this out to you ASAP!

Last but not least, I would like to congratulate the following members on their respective rank advancements!

Have a great weekend everyone!

Colonial Warrior

Battle Suit

Costume Reference Library (CRL)

Written by Jason Childers

And Mark Todd

Additional material by Quartermaster Rachel Orange,

With John Williams and Edward O’Connell

(First edition: July 2010)

Colonial Warriors are the staple of the “Battlestar Galactica” universe. They are usually the first to make contact with a civilization and are representatives of the 12 Colonies. So it is very important that costumers who dress as Colonial Warriors look their best. The standard Colonial Warrior uniform is the definitive costume within Blackstar Squadron. All reference material is located in the CRL reference section (link). As stated in Article II of the Blackstar Squadron charter, our ultimate goal is to “create the most screen accurate representation of any particular costume or prop based off of the most reliable information available”. Standardization of fabrics, colors, and other materials is purely meant to expedite costume approval and ensure a degree of quality and uniformity. These standardized items are preferred but not required. Some degree of variation in quality and color is expected and will be given fair consideration within reason. This includes costumes made from materials not listed below.

All costumes are subject to Squadron Quartermaster approval.

Battle Jacket: (Optional)

The Colonial Warrior jacket or “battle jacket” is considered by many to be the most recognizable part of the uniform. However, on rare occasions warriors are seen without a Battle Jacket.

The Colonial Warrior jacket must consist of:

· “Chocolate” brown or “Root beer” brown material (color variation must be within reason, not too dark and not too light) of such a nap that it mimics ultra suede or suede fabric. Standard: Alova Suede, (Brown) or Butter Suede (Light Brown).

· Shoulders must be of dark brown suede or sueded leather or of fabric that exactly mimics suede or sueded leather.

· Jacket must have 4 buckles of the same type used in the original series. Buckles can be pristine or for added accuracy can be “dusted” with flat black spray paint. While accurate buckles remain readily available, they will remain squadron standard. Standard buckles available from www.katarra8.com.

· ¼” (approximate) corded piping that runs horizontally across the wearer’s breast below the collarbone at approximately armpit level.

· A rectangle on the front left shoulder area above the horizontal piping approximately 4" from the front left jacket edge.

· A vertical 2-3” drop approximately 4-5” from right side of jacket center edge.

· A rectangle above the piping line measuring 2-3” approximately 4-5” from the left side jacket center edge.

· A 4-5” square from the right center edge to approximately the middle of the right jacket hem bottom.

· Large square 5-6” starting from the jacket right front panel seam and continuing to within 1.5” of the smaller square on the right front jacket hem bottom.

· Piping line that completes the circumference of the wearer’s right arm at the bicep, this must also include a rectangle approximately 2-3” below the piping line on the outside center of the arm.

· Additional line that completes the circumference of the wearer’s left arm at approximately 2-3” above the wearer’s cuff hem.

· Piping must include a continuous edge around the entire jacket front panels and collar.

· Waistband at the back from seam to seam approximately 2.5” in height and must present a gathered appearance from the wearer’s back.

· Patch on the right arm approximately halfway down the wearer’s right bicep but above the square of piping located there. The patch must be canon to be approved by squadron quartermaster for club sponsored activities.

· Jacket must fit the wearer in a manner that is tailored. Cuffs and bottom hemlines that hang below wearer’s fingertips and beltline will not be accepted.

· Jacket does not require collar insignia but is highly recommended. Collar insignia must be canon to be approved by squadron quartermaster for club sponsored activities.

Tunic: (Required)

The Colonial Warrior tunic is the base of the entire uniform. Its distinguishing features include an Egyptian style collar, signature piping, and quilted front overlay. Standard tunic and pants should be made of the same colored fabric (there should be no variation in color between the two/made of the same fabric).

The Colonial Warrior tunic must consist of:

· “Camel” tan or sand colored material of such a nap that it mimics ultra suede or suede fabric. Standard: “Light Khaki” Alova Suede or “Tan” Butter suede *Note: A screen accurate “Sand” colored fabric has yet to be located.

· Neckline must mimic that of the original series “Egyptian style”. ¼” (approximate) piping must encompass the entire neckline midway between the wearer’s neck and shoulders, neckline must incorporate a line of black/gold checkered trim with optional gold trim that encompasses entire hemline (not all uniforms had this gold trim in the series). Trim must mimic that of the original series. A second line of black/gold checkered trim must encompass the wearer’s neckline at the top and must be of the same type. Collar can be a smooth circle shape or pulled down into a slight V, depending on wearer's preference

· Sleeve cuffs must be encircled with 1 line of black/gold checkered trim, 1 line of solid gold trim, and another line of black/gold checkered trim of the same type all starting at the cuff hemline.

· The front of the tunic must be of the “bib” style with Velcro closure along the left side hemline.

· The “bib” portion must contain horizontal ribbing running the entire length of the front (mimicking the belly of a “viper”). Ribbing must be approximately 1.12” in height. Ribbing should be padded from upper hemline at shoulder to below the wearer’s breast line for screen accuracy but is not required.

· Cuff closures are hook and eye.

· Tunic must have a patch approximately halfway down the wearer’s right sleeve bicep between the shoulder seem and the elbow. The patch must be canon to be approved by squadron quartermaster for club sponsored activities and must match its respective insignia.

· *Back Zipper variants in the “Galactica 1980” style are acceptable.

· Tunic must fit the wearer in a manner that is tailored. Cuffs that hang below wearer’s fingertips will not be accepted.

· Tunic does not require collar insignia but can be included. Collar insignia must be canon to be approved by squadron quartermaster for club sponsored activities.

Pants: (Required)

Standard tunic and pants should be made of the same colored fabric (there should be no variation in color between the two/made of the same fabric).

The Colonial Warrior pants must consist of:

· “Camel” tan or sand colored material of such a nap that it mimics ultra suede or suede fabric. Standard: “Light Khaki” Alova Suede or “Tan” Butter suede *Note: A screen accurate “Sand” colored fabric has yet to be located.

· Male uniforms must have a front zipper fly, with hook closure.

· Female uniforms may have a front zipper fly, or side zipper, with hook closure.

· Belt loops running the entirety of the waistband.

· Should have “stirrups” at the cuff hemline for screen accuracy but are not required.

· Must not contain pockets.

· Must be accompanied by a web belt. Belt must be navy steel grey, blue, or black in color and must contain brass/gold colored hardware (military slide buckle and tip) Standard: Steel Gray

· Must fit the wearer in a manner that is tailored and must be tucked into costume boots.

Boots: (Required)

Though there is some variance in canon boot styles, Sidi Fullbore motocross boots are the most identifiable boots associated with the Colonial Warrior uniform. Jackboots were seen on many background characters, as well as various styles of Women’s boots for female warriors.

Colonial Warrior boots must consist of one of the following options:

· SIDI Full-Bore motocross boots with 7 buckles or equivalent (equivalency will be decided by and subject to Squadron Quartermaster approval).

· Joel Robert's Full Bore replicas.

· Black or Cordovan Jackboots

· Female warriors may wear a variety of boots with or without a heel appropriate to late 1970s style as well as the options available to male warriors.

· Color for all “battle boots” should be Meletonian Nu Life, Color Spray 636 Cordovan, or black.

· Alternative boots are subject to Squadron Quartermaster approval.

Gunbelt:(Not required)

The gun belt of a Colonial Warrior, if worn, must include the following:

· Steel grey, blue, or black military pistol belt with brass hardware and fittings. Standard: Steel Grey

· Three gold colored “recharge cylinders” made from the original markers used or equivalent (such as resin castings) attached at the front hip, the same side as wearer’s pistol hand.

· Brown plastic (Kydex) holster that is equivalent in design to the original series.

· A black tie down must accompany the wearer’s holster, tie down can be fastened with hook/loop fastener or by a small black buckle. Must be “snug” on the wearer’s thigh.

· Holster must hold laser pistol securely.

Warrior Watch: (Not required)

The wristwatch worn on Battlestar Galactica was an air craft made Huges Compuchron LED calculator watch.

Watch Options include:

· Standard: Original Compuchron

· Resin casting of an original

· Casio Men’s Data Calculator Watch CA-506-1U CA506 1

Laser Pistol:(Not required)

See props CRL

Command Variant (Commander Cain-style):

· Jacket must meet all requirements of Standard Colonial Warrior and also include oak leaves or “scrambled eggs” on the shoulder leather, and a badge resembling that of Commander Cain’s, worn in the square of piping on the left breast. Standard: Alova Suede, (Brown) or Butter Suede (Light Brown).

· Tunic must meet all the requirements of Standard Colonial Warrior. Standard: “Light Khaki” Alova Suede or “Tan” Butter suede *Note: A screen accurate “Sand” colored fabric has yet to be located.

· Pants must meet all the requirements of Standard Colonial Warrior however; the fabric and color of the jacket & pants must match. A gold blood stripe must be added. Standard: Alova Suede Brown

· No cylinders are required for the gun belt on this variation of the uniform.
