Sentry Robot pistol from "The Black Hole"

Post by Red Eye » Wed Jun 30, 2010 4:10 am

In his last mail, my pal who's making the Imperious Leader mask for me attached some pics of another project he'll complete for me.

I was told it was recasted from the original screen-used props used by the Sentry Robots (and later the survivors of the U.S.S. Palomino) in Walt Disney's first trip to the stars called "The Black Hole".

As you can see, the prop is already finished now (aside form a few minor repairs and adjusting the paint here and there).

Please let me know what you think about it.

VERY VERY NICE RedEye!
Were they Black/Silver or all silver in the movie? I can't remember and I think I've seen both in fan props?

That is very cool. I wish I knew about this about 2 weeks ago. I saw someone selling a screen used robot helmet from the guys that used these things. It would have been a good pairing up. Thanks for sharing this.

Several photos of the screen-used prop were used as reference for painting, so it should have a very close look to the originals.

Are you able to get any pics of that screen-used helmet? I'm still looking for good-quality reference for my bust...

Cool, I always wanted one of these. PIH sold one a while back, and for the Sentry helmet - try the Propstore of London's site. They had some good pictures, but they don't seem to be coming up at this moment. Also, look on the TRON bonus disc, as a Sentry was painted white and used in pre-production as a test suit.

Yes, I have the catalogs of PiH in which the auctions for the pistols were included. I could provide some scans for them if you like...

As for the Sentry costume, I'm still wondering if there are any complete Sentries around somewhere.

Here are some screencaps of the Sentry costume used for the lighting tests of "Tron":

Oh man! COOL... and "nevermind" lol
Great work Red Eye. I wonder what happened to that suit? It has two claims to fame.

Sorry for being so hasty again.

I'm afraid to see a complete Sentry costume which survived to this day would be next to impossible, at least from what I've heard so far.

Most of them were destroyed during filming (like most of our chromed friends) and most of the surviving costume parts were shredded by the studio leaving behind some fragments like a few helmets and chestplates. :(

Great Screen captures!! Yes, I also read in the past that the suits were destroyed - the Prop Store helmet also had a chest plate, if I remember correctly. Although..... Disney being a much larger studio that Lucasfilm, there would have been more opportunity for employees to report "missing" peices..... SO perhaps there are some out there - just not for those of us on the public forums - we can always dream!

Yes, but I hope we're able to actually SEE a complete Sentry someday...

A befriended collector does have a screen-used helmet and chestplate, by the way.

I think he don't mind if I upload these pictures here, so are you interested in seeing them anyway?
