This design (along with the Defender) is in a special category of ships. It was originally designed and rendered as a TOS-era vessel by the late Steve Wilson, a pioneer of the early days of computer graphics and animation. Long before NuBSG was even thought about, it was nothing more than one of many fan-made designs he built over the years, that somehow caught the attention of BSG's visual effects team who made a film-ready model of it.

I think Steve would be proud that his design made it to the big-time.
