I have emailed Eric Melson on a few occasions, and he is an extremely nice guy and loves to talk about his Cylon including how it was made... I like many, was disappointed when they revamped the cylons using CGI for the new series. While Eric's cylon looks totally awesome. And well in keeping with the originals in my thinking. Job well done Eric that's for sure....
Heres what he said about his cylon and a few pictures and links for you guys.
Quote from Eric
“To answer a few of your questions... Yes I made it myself and not the traditional way like you would think... Most people believed that I created a mold and vacuum formed my Cylon... Believe it or not I made it out of a Heavy Paper, glued the pieces together and formed other pieces together with Duct Tape. Once the different pieces were shaped and formed I used Fiber Glass and Resin to Harden the overall exterior of my Cylon.
All of the electronics where purchased at my local electronics store. Even effects for the Gun! By it self the gun was once just a Super Soaker water gun. I gutted out the inside and added electronics to it. Basically its a Memory Chip hooked up to a Home Made 10 Watt amplifier. Lots of fancy led's timed using a 555 Timer circuit. You can purchase all of these things at a electronics store near you. The Voice is a modified child's toy. I gutted the parts I needed and modified the Amplifier with the Same 10 watt amp that I used in the gun. Changed out the microphone and speaker to a much better quality component. The microphone is located right inside the helmet and the speaker is actually located in the Chest to get better bass frequencies. You asked about the Motors you here when I walk. Actually there are 3 separate motors in the costume located in the backpack. The backpack is a great location for the motors since it helps to amplify the sound. Each Motor has a different Pitch to it. You can't hear them on You Tube unfortunately. You only heard the Legs as I walked by. The background music drowns out the rest of the sound effects. Anyway, the one motor sounds off when I turn my head. The second motor sounds off whenever I raise my arm up and down or turn my torso from left to right.
The Cylon is kept here at my house... It was displayed as a Huge Figurine in my Home Office. However I got tired of people touching and playing with it when they came over. I disassembled it and stored it away safe and sound.. “
