Emotionally powerful dialogue

Is there any particular line of dialogue from Galactica that packs a really strong emotional punch for you? For me it's Apollo's simple statement to Adama, "My ideals rise and fall on your standards." As both a father and a son, whenever I truly stop to think about that I get moved to tears.

I guess I'm just touched by the powerful paternal-filial bond between those characters, which can withstand frequent conflicts and come out even stronger. And I'm still missing Richard Hatch.

That is a great scene.

There's several good pieces of dialogue between Apollo and Adama though the series. Hatch and Greene had the chemistry, and were a great match to play off each other.

One of my favorites, is Hatch delivering the speech (especially the extended version found in the telemovie) near the end of Experiment In Terra. It's not emotional like the same way in the scene you picked, but still very good I think.

We've all heard about how it was originally Starbuck that was supposed to go with John to Terra, and how after Hatch complained the characters switched and Starbucks lines became Apollo's and vice versa. No offense meant towards Benedict, but I don't think the speech would have held as much weight had Starbuck made it. That speech was pure Apollo, and Hatch delivered.

Yes, I've always liked Apollo's speech about freedom. Too bad the episode had to be cut down so much; it plays a lot better in the telemovie.

I agree that Starbuck wouldn't have had the same "gravitas" in that speech. Conversely, some of Starbuck's lines wouldn't have played as well if spoken by Apollo... I'm thinking of things like "Stand aside or I'll walk right through you" and "You don't want to do that or I'll do this to you." The only line Apollo speaks that seems ill-suited to him is the one about "better give up the nightlife." We all know Apollo's no party animal.

You are correct I would not see Starbuck pulling off that speech at a good emotional level, but then it could have been a new barrier for Dirk as a actor to break.

True, and a next step along Starbuck's road to becoming what he was going to be in "The Wheel of Fire."

To me, Apollo's line "It beats just plain nowhere" still sticks with me to this day! Those words along with the Battlestar Galactica musical score make these very powerful words indeed.
