Original number of complete Centurion costumes made?

Post by FLIGHTLDR SERPENTINE » Sun Oct 04, 2015 4:00 pm

I was wondering if it's been documented how many complete Centurion costumes (armor and undersuit, etc.) were originally ordered and made? I'm sure replacement parts were made as the show went on. And would one complete set of armor fit on one 4' x 8' sheet?

According to costume designer Jean-Pierre Dorléac, about 35 Centurion costumes were made for the series. Each costume cost more than $3,000.00 to create.

Wow, that's a surprisingly large number. I would have thought more like 20. I'm trying to recall the most seen on screen at any one time… Maybe on Atilla in "The Young Lords"? 10 - 15? Maybe they were thinking ahead for replacements as the first used would get pretty banged up. I know I should know this, but who made them originally (armor)? ILM? Universal? I know ILM at least made the prototypes and final design master. The recent Steve Gawley auction would suggest that ILM made them, at least in the beginning.

Thanks for the info Red Eye :cylongold: .

Ralph Massey was responsible for sculpting the clay maquette and also put the prototype armor together.

There were also many on screen, at once, in the Carillon underground before they attacked the party. They were there, but in a fog/mist.

Only 29 complete suits were made. That count came from the under suits that were made. Many of the suits during filming were destroyed as part of the making of the show.

I remember someone on a DVD saying they would sometimes reach a point during an episode when someone would say, "Okay, we've used up our budget so we can't kill any more Cylons this week."
"I may move to the command chamber. I'm sure they're talking about me while I'm in here."

That was the filming of Saga that quote is from. Not many Cylons were blown up or destroyed after Sage was wrapped. Chromed plastic pieces were cheaper to make over the vast majority of the Cylon blown up. Also none of the under suits were never replaced.

I suppose they've re-used the original undersuits on the Centurions walking the Universal Studios theme parks in the late 70's and early 80's, correct?

Yes those undersuits were the leftovers from the filming production while the show was filming, and then after the show wrapped the inventory was used by the theme park, and rental companies that used the Cylons as costume rentals.
