Is there anything good about Fire in Space?

Post by Hope It Is The Grog » Thu Oct 17, 2013 7:37 pm

Name your least favorite episode and I'll tell you something I like about it. With one exception.

I have to say I can't remember a single day in my life when I thought, "You know, I'd really like to watch Fire in Space." I just can't get into that episode and can't really say the same of any other.

The first time I saw it was as the first half of Curse of the Cylons, and it worked OK in that context. But after seeing it once and knowing that everyone survives and how the day is saved, the tension isn't really there the second time. It's all fire in the bay, fire extinguishers, daggit, air ducts, mushies , rejuvenation center, fire in the bay, fire extinguishers, daggit, ...

Seriously, name any other episode and I'll sing its (however muted) praises.

Or, on a more positive note, is there anything you like about Fire in Space?

A few new shots of the Galactica miniature with the fire effects in the bays.

We get to see the fire crews and some computer schematics of the ship's internals.

Boomer doing cool heroic stuff. :salute:

Spacewalks on the ship's hull with completely the wrong section of the hull shown behind, but I can dig it.

Gruff old Dr. Salik is always cool to see.

The bridge trashed.

Kamikaze runs from the Cylons.

Um.....

LOTS more Maren than usual! :loveit:

Okay, I finally rewatched it and found it enjoyable enough through its relative unfamiliarity. And six specific Fun Things:

1. Tigh's rather priceless expression just before setting the tray of mushies in the opening of the air duct.

2. The low-angle shots of the pilots making the Boraton (always makes me think of Borateem) runs. An interesting departure from the norm; I guess it was meant to signify that the chemical payload was weighing down the back end of the Viper?

3. The thing Cylon-Knight mentioned elsewhere, Sheba's magic helmet-change early in the episode. Galactica, Pegasus, Galactica. She also launched with her Pegasus helmet on, so I guess that's three magic helmet-changes in all.

4. The extensive medical use of the all-purpose "4" scanner/communicator device. "Pulse?" "4." "Blood pressure?" "4." "Temperature?" "Take a wild guess."

5. Jeff MacKay stealing no fewer than five looks at Laurette Spang's chest during his one brief scene. The last one, an obvious backward gawk as he's taken out the door, made me laugh aloud.

6. The amazingly-visible harness wires suspending Starbuck and Apollo during their "untethered" spacewalk. Perhaps on the smaller screens of the late Seventies they wouldn't have been so noticeable? I dunno, though; I think I remember seeing them during Curse of the Cylons back in 1980, even on VHS at SLP.

All in all I think I could watch it again, given five or ten years to forget enough of it. :nah:

Oh and Muffit II. If a person wants to see the daggit costume, Fire in Space is the show to watch for sure.

No animals were harmed in the making of this program. Unless you count making a chimp walk through fire.

When I see it we may all be dead, so I'll just do it now.

I must have missed it because I was watching for the wires. I don't see how being tethered to the ship would have "slowed them down" as Apollo says, unless he means they would have kept bumping into the wires that were holding up the tethers.

Also, I didn't really check this time, but I seem to remember from days of yore that different people pointing at the ship's schematic were notably inconsistent about where Beta section was located.

Not an episode I liked back in the day, and in 2003 when I rewatched the series on the R1 DVD set I thought it wasn't up to much. However, when I rewatched it again in early 2014 on the German BD set I found that I quite liked it. My only real quibble is that bit where they lure the daggit by laying a trail of mushies; why would a robot desire food? Surely, it wouldn't be able to process it?

That's a good point... unless Wilker programmed it to simulate a desire for food and some form of ingestion. Which would necessitate either periodic cleanouts or something worse. :bsglol:

No one, and nothing can resist... mushies.
